[14 Apr 08] Update

Yesterday I raced my first Intermediate race at The Leahy Family Farm in Milliken Colorado. The weather was great and the track was awesome. I went out for my practice and felt really comfortable running with the big guys and riding at a much faster pace. My first moto was the 250B class and there were about 30 people on the line. I got a decent gate pick, I think it was 18th, so my line to the first corner was OK. I was left of the Dog House by a couple of gates and I think it added at least 20-30 feet. My Dad suggested I go wide to avoid the first turn traffic jam and he was right and I am happy I listened to him. When the gate dropped I got a pretty good jump and held it wide open through the first turn. I ended up 7th through the first turn and in turn 2 and 3 I passed a couple more people, I think I was running 5th out of turn 3 when I hit the face of a very slick jump wide open...OOPS! The back end of my bike slid out from under me as I launched into the air. I knew I couldn’t save it so I ditched the bike a fell about 10-15 feet to the ground. My bike took a pretty good hit and landed upside down. The bars, bar mounts and Radiator shroud are ruined. As for me I got a Fat Lip, Scraped Chin, a huge Raspberry on my side and…….I think I broke my arm…..again. I won’t know for sure until tomorrow when I visit my Orthopedist after the swelling goes down. Not a great way to start but hey….THATS RACING!

[1 Apr 08] Movin’ on up …

After the races in Lake Whitney and this past weekend in Dacono Colorado I have decided to move up to the Intermediate class. While I am still only 13 years old and the fact that I only raced twice in 2007 and about 5 times in 2006 in the 85 class my speed and years of experience make me feel like a sandbagger in the Novice class and I am just not motivated to stay in that class any longer. While I am sure I will get my butt handed to me quite a few times this year I would rather finish mid pack than finish in the top 3 in the Novice class. Since we had never done an AMA Amateur National until this year at Lake Whitney we didn’t know what to expect so we stayed in the Novice class to gain the experience. Once is enough, while I didn’t do that well due to a long winter layoff, poor starts and comical crashes I know I can run top 10-15 in the Intermediate class and I would rather do that than be a Sandbagger…Wish me luck.

RMXA Series Report …

Last weekend I raced a local RMXA race in Dacono Colorado. It was 26 degrees at the start of my first moto and I froze my butt off. To paraphrase Forest Gump “The weather in Colorado is like a box of chocolates…ya never know what you’re gonna get”. Saturday it was sunny and warm…a little windy but tolerable. Sunday there was snow on the ground, track and starting line. While it was cold the track owners did a great job and the track was awesome. I raced the Amateur Open B/C, Schoolboy and Novice class. This was my last race in the Novice class as I am moving to the Intermediate class next race. I was going to remain Novice for the remainder of the year but my father and I just don’t feel right about it (see above).  I didn’t even win, I got 3rd but the Top 3 myself included, have no business in the Novice class. As a matter of fact I got terrible starts again all day and came from dead last to 2nd in the first moto and from dead last to 5th in 2nd moto. As a “True Novice” you shouldn’t be able to do that.

Lake Whitney Report …

We had quite a bit of bad luck at Lake Whitney and after less than impressive results we have decided to sit out a few of the upcoming Amateur National rounds and focus on getting back to 100%. In my Lites C Mod Moto #1 I got a horrible start after I dumped my clutch and spun my rear wheel for what seemed like 5 seconds. I got stuck behind some fallen riders; I came through the first lap in 15th fell back to 18th and then came back to 15th.  Not what I was hoping for but without a good start at Lake Whitney you’re pretty much done. In the Lites C Stock Moto #1 I again got a horrible start, crashed and just tried my best to catch up. I finished the first lap in 29th and worked my way up to 25th by the checkers. In my second Moto of Lites C Mod I got a decent start and was 9th through the first lap, and then I slid out, fell, and blew corners for the remaining 4 laps. I was a little upset when it was over but after a while it started to make me laugh. I finished in 21st for a 22nd Overall. The 2nd Moto of the Lites C stock class was the next morning and I wasn’t feeling very well so we decided to pack it in and head home so I got a DNS for Moto #2 of the Lites C Stock class. Overall I had fun, but I wish I would have done better. No excuses, but next year I will spend the winter in Arizona so I don’t have a 4 month layoff between motos.

[15 Mar 08] 2008 AMA Parts Unlimited Spring Classic, 3/11/2008, Lake Whitney MX, Whitney, TX  Andrew finished 22nd in the MX Lites C/D Modified Class with moto finishes of 15/21.  He finished 38th overall in the MX Lites C/D Stock after 25/DNS moto finishes.  Check back for a full race report.

[24 Feb 08] We spent this weekend practicing and did not go to Lake Whitney as planned.  We ordered a new RV and it didn't make it in time for the trip. Anyway, my knee is much better and I feel I am back to about 90% I still have some work to do but I will be ready for the Lake Whitney Spring Classic and I am really looking forward to getting to Texas.  Check out the PDF slide show from the weekend.

[10 Feb 08] I practiced turns again today for about 4 hours in the Snow and Mud. At first I had to clear out the corners from all the snow while my Dad snapped pictures from the warm interior of the truck. As you can see from the pictures some of the ruts ended up being pretty big and a lot of fun. By the 3rd hour the Turn-Track was really muddy and sloppy but I stayed out for about another hour just having a blast. I finally bailed in one of the corners and while I didn’t get hurt I was covered with mud and decided to call it a day.

Until Next Time….

[7 Feb 08] Hello everyone, my knee is still pretty sore but the good news I don’t need surgery and the bad news is I won’t be racing until the Honda of Houston season opener and Loretta Lynn Qualifier on February 23 and 24th in Lake Whitney Texas. In the meantime I will be working with my riding coach, Bobby Fitch, to get back to speed. I think I am about 70% right now so I have a lot of work to do over the next two weeks. Also, I spent last weekend riding in the snow on a ‘turn track’ it was great for throttle control and body positioning but really bad if your trying to avoid catching a cold. Until next time…Hachoo!

[27 Jan 08] Hello Everyone,  I hurt my knee on Monday snowboarding. It’s my left knee again which is the same knee I hurt in January 2007. In January 2007 I tore my MCL and didn’t get to ride for 12 weeks. I don’t think this time it is as bad. I can’t completely straighten my left leg yet and it is really sore but that didn’t keep me from racing this weekend at Aztec Raceway in Colorado Springs. We were going to go to Sandia in Albuquerque but since I haven’t ridden since mid November and we were unsure about my knee we stayed close to home. I only raced one class, Open Novice, and scored a 2-2 and got second overall. The track was awesome and the weather was great. I spent Sunday morning practicing at Thunder Valley Raceway in Lakewood, Colorado and Sunday afternoon practicing at Watkins MX Park in Aurora, CO. I hate to admit it but I’m pretty rusty after the 3 month layoff but I had fun and I seemed to get some of the speed back before the end of the day.
